Latest NewsNEW FINANCE DIRECTOR APPOINTED (17 April 2007)
The BBA has appointed Brian Symington as Finance Director, taking over from former Finance Director Jim Wright on his retirement last month.
Brian joined the BBA from Fosroc Limited, where he held a number of finance-related positions.
Fosroc Limited is a BBA Certificate holder, so the BBA was a known quantity to Brian when considering this key career move.
Brian commented: ‘I am delighted to have joined the BBA at such a significant time in its history. I knew the value placed on BBA approval by my former employer at home and abroad and I am confident that this value will be recognised by more and more manufacturers both in the UK and further afield.’
Outside work, Brian is a keen football supporter and has followed Liverpool FC through thick and thin for many years. BUILDING REGULATIONS PART F: 2006 MEANS OF VENTILATION
Under the Amended Building Regulations Part F: 2006 there is a change from ‘free area’ for the sizing of background ventilators (including trickle ventilators) to ‘equivalent area’.
Equivalent area is a better measure of the actual airflow performance of the ventilator.
Free area is simply the physical size of the aperture of the ventilator but may not accurately reflect the airflow performance which the ventilator will achieve in use.
The more restricted or contorted the airflow path the less air will actually flow, so two different ventilators with the same free area will not necessarily have the same airflow performance.
The new European standard BS EN 13141-1 : 2004 Ventilation for buildings – Performance testing of components / products for residential ventilation – Externally and Internally mounted air transfer devices, (Clause 4) includes a method for the measurement of equivalent area for background ventilator openings.
The BBA is in a position to assist vent and window manufacturers/suppliers alike in determining the airflow to the new standard.

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 come into force on 6th April and replace the previous Regulations of 1994 and 2000.
The aim of the new Regulations is to:
Under the previous Regulations, the different parties to the construction process needed to consider the safety of the proposed design during construction (which could include safe arrangements for storage) and during maintenance throughout the service life of the building. Agrément Certificates include guidance on the safety of products in respect of their chemical, biological, mechanical, manual handling, working at heights and fire hazards (during storage and construction as well as in service). This text assisted the different parties to the design process to develop a safe design and procedures, and previous Certificates included a section to draw attention to it.
From 6th April Agrément Certificates will now refer to the new Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and continue to give the guidance on safety they have previously and will include a reference to the new role of the CDM co-ordinator.
Parallel changes are expected to the equivalent Northern Ireland regulations and Agrément Certificates will cover the revised Regulations when they are introduced.
GOOD INSTALLERS GAIN A NEW ROUTE TO TRUSTMARK (17 April 2007)
TrustMark has approved the British Board of Agrément as a scheme operator. There are now 20 approved scheme operators, making many thousands of firms eligible to join the scheme.
TrustMark is a new scheme supported by Government, the building industry and consumer groups and aims to register reputable tradespeople, therefore providing increased consumer protection.
As well as awarding its Agrément Certificates, the BBA also operates Approved Installer schemes, provides inspection resources to the FENSA scheme for installation of replacement windows and doors in England and Wales and for manufacturer-run schemes for the installation of BBA-approved products.
Martyn Reed, Operations Director Certification and Inspection of the BBA commented: ‘The BBA is pleased to announce that it has been approved to become a TrustMark scheme operator. This will enable installers who are members of schemes run by building product manufacturers and who meet the BBA’s stringent requirements, to also gain TrustMark accreditation and a sign that they’re committed to fair-trading practice.’
